The Sega Dreamcast is a game console made by Sega and the successor to the Sega Saturn. Sega's final home game console, it was a sixth-generation console released in Japan on November 27, 1998 and September 9, 1999 in North America. It was rivaled by fifth-generation consoles Nintendo 64 and PlayStation and by the sixth-generation console PlayStation 2 (both the Nintendo GameCube and Xbox were not yet released during the Dreamcast's lifespan). Some of its' most notable games were Sonic Adventure 1 & 2, Crazy Taxi, Marvel vs. Capcom, Jet Set Radio and Seaman. It was discontinued worldwide on March 31, 2001.
Despite the Dreamcast's 2-3 year lifespan on the market, it was notable for being the first console with a built-in Modem to support online play and Internet access. This was a big influence on future generations of video game consoles which began to also develop online gameplay.
