"How did it tank so bad? Some say that it's because the game was overpriced because it came with a player's guide inside of an oversized box...YOUR MOM HAS AN OVERSIZED BOX!"
—The Nerd

EarthBound, also known as Mother 2 in Japan, is a 1994 RPG developed by Ape and HAL Laboratory, published by Nintendo and released for the Super Nintendo in North America in 1995. It is the second game in the Mother series, though released as a solo game in North America. It follows Ness and his friends Jeff, Paula and Poo as they collect eight melodies around the world to defeat the evil alien force Giygas. Despite not being popular in America when first released, it gained a cult following in later years with its' popularity being partly credited to the inclusion of Ness in Super Smash Bros.

AVGN Episode[]

The episode first aired on Amazon Prime early before it was released on YouTube on April 25, 2018. The Nerd reveals how EarthBound was rarely talked about in North America and settles for having to play it on the SNES Classic due to the ridiculous prices on eBay after reading rave reviews for it online. The Nerd enjoys the game and views it as a masterpiece but admits to the serious flaws it has, keeping in tradition with the AVGN series. Midway through the episode, the Nerd enters into his own subconscious similar to Ness and his friends, seeing characters and settings from previous AVGN episodes as well as characters not seen before in the series such as Bimmy as he sets out to beat Giygas with the support of his fans and friends.

  • At 39:31, it is currently the second longest AVGN episode, being surpassed by "The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask" which has a runtime of 41:04.
  • The Nerd gives the same reaction upon smelling the EarthBound ads that he did in the "Nintendo Power" episode.
  • Due to Young Nerd having lines in the script and storyline, it is the first time he is seen as an actual smaller version of The Nerd rather than being portrayed in old home videos by the real James Rolfe as a child.
  • Another interesting fact unrelated to the review since The Nerd is playing a legit ROM: If a bootleg version of EarthBound is played, an anti-piracy tactic will be activated which crams the game with more random battles and will also delete save files if the player dies during the final battle against Giygas.
  • This episode wasn't originally planned from the moment James begins playing Earthbound on his SNES Classic Edition due to curiosity of praises he heard from many gamers as one of the best RPG on the SNES. "Since I was so familiar with the console and had thoroughly played Final Fantasy III (VI), Chrono Trigger, and all the great masterpieces, it was mandatory for me to play EarthBound sooner or later." However he recorded it beforehand in case he could use this in his channel at any form. Upon reviewing the footage he recorded and reflecting his experiences, it had enough wacky materials to work with as an AVGN episode.
    • On the note of the footage, the heroes of the game he's playing were given different names from Ness to Milly, Paula to Lilly, Jeff to Bob, and Poo to Oliv. Each of them were playfully named by his 4 years old daughter.
