Critical reception[]

George Pacheco of The Examiner awarded the sountrack 5/5 stars, commenting that "the young musician [Bear McCreary] and composer high marks for his versatility and ability to combine melodic themes with anxious, palpable tension" and that the score's "dramatic, swirling strings and barely-there electronic backing track support could have easily found there way onto the set of a big budget fantasy or science fiction". He also noted that "the composer [Bear McCreary] truly delivers the goods here with a varied, dynamic and memorable score which serves as one of McCreary's best scores to date, from any of the myriad of genres with which he's worked." Pacheco also commented on the metal rhytm tracks, saying "McCreary's brother Brendan also contributes to the AVGN score, with two tracks in an over the top 80s metal style, the first of which, "Nerds Before Birds" is a fantastically catchy throwback to glam/hair metal excess with a driving rhythm not entirely dissimilar to classic AC/DC." [2]

Charlie Brigden of Films On Wax praises Bear McCreary in a review of the soundtrack, saying that the composer's "knowledge of classical and film music and the chiptunes of Nintendo and Sega makes him the perfect guy for the job." He also comments that the "score has a really good sense of variety that fits with its video game homaging, and McCreary is brilliantly adept at allowing the video games to manifest naturally as an retro-evolution of sorts, moving from the orchestra to chiptunes from the eight and sixteen-bit eras." Bridgen praised the creepy bits of the score, saying they are used to great effect. One minor critiscm Bridgen had was that "amongst all the craziness the score never really gets that emotional" Bridgen further praises the score saying "there are some lovely warm melodies in there that are one of McCreary’s lesser-known trademarks, and when it gets to the end and throws out the AVGN theme in full with those soaring strings it’s fab. Bridgen ends the review with, "The cherry on top is an extended version of the theme with the original lyrics" [3]
